Ash Wednesday Worship
Ash Wednesday serves as the beginning of the season of Lent, the Christian’s 40-day journey with the Lord to his cross and tomb. This year Ash Wednesday falls on February 14th and will be the first of six mid-week Lent services at Christ the Lord, beginning at 7pm. On Ash Wednesday, we will observe an ancient church practice, the imposition of ashes. It is a symbol and tradition that is meant to remind the Christian of his or her need for redeeming grace because of the effects of sin. Connected to the symbol are the words “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.” If this tradition and symbol helps you to focus on the curse of sin and our great need for the grace of our God, please make use of it during the service. If you would prefer not to receive ashes, please don’t feel obligated to do so. Traditions such as this are a matter of freedom for our worship and if it is not helpful in someone’s mind to highlight the grace of God, then we wouldn’t do it. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this practice, please speak with pastor.
